Some 20 teen music downloaders nailed by RIAA lawyers will be featured in Pepsi's Super Bowl ads, according to a USA Today report.

The spot will promote a Pepsi limited-time offer of up to 100 million free, legal downloads from the Apple's online iTunes music store.

"We are still going to download music for free off the Internet," announces one Pepsi-sipping teen. According to the report, agency BBDO persuaded band Green Day to record a cover of "I Fought the Law" for the spot....

I've heard that a bunch of big new school bands are gonna be doing a Clash tribute record to be released Dec. 04

(although, that's just a rumor - shit, maybe I shouldn't had said anything...)

I've had a clash tribute cd for years already with No Doubt doing Hateful and Mach 10 doing some bizzare version of Should I Stay or Should I go. I lost the insert and the disc doesn't say anything on it so I'm not sure who else is on it. OH, I think the Mighty Mighty Bosstones do Radio Clash, and some country dudes do White Riot. Really funny, that one is.

Sellout punks doing a song that isn't even a Clash original....what gives?

Yet another nail in the coffin of Sell-Out Punkism...

it could be worse...Janie Jones is my fave Clash song...and a band called Neurotic Outsiders (comprised of great members of other great bands...Sex Pistols, Guns and Roses, Duran Duran) covered it and ruined it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Steve Jones should NEVER be allowed to sing a clash song!

I won't say they ruined it, but didn't do that great of a job of covering it.

Sigh...Cicero wrote "the big mountain gave birth to a mouse"...am sorry that the Clash must be covered by established bands whose aim is only to get more money and spread horror products:(. The sense of The Clash may get lost very rapidly.
Such bands have just a name: The Cash!

          Sorry for my outlet!

Well, Rev....it is not the first time I get crushed like a mosquito for my opinions;). Thank you for sharing my view.
I think of the many minor bands that do not even get a place to play, go figure of any label interested in promoting them. And I think,on the other side, of how many so called artists can do "their do". This makes me really sad.

Steve Jones is still a great guitar player, and I think the song was ok but not great.

i know this thread is really old and that this may have been mentioned already, but I Fought the Law by the Clash is actually a cover... And whatever happened with the Clash getting with Tim Armstrong, was that a fake rumor or what? I could see it happening since the Mescaleros were under Hellcat. I just saw the Joe Strummer documentary and it was awesome. If he had lived, the Clash would have gotten back together and Green Day wouldn't have covered this cover....

and to respond to the topic, I'm 50/50 on it. It wasn't a bad cover . it was solid... but really uninspiring.

i wonder who will cover " ghetto defender" and/or "know your rights" . there are so many fantastic songs.

A band called the Caravans covered Know Your Rights on UNCUT: White Riot Vol One, a 2 CD Clash Tribute that only came out in the UK. There are some nice covers on it by bands who obviously appreciate The Clash and don't appear to be just trying to make a buck. Nouvelle Vague does Guns of Brixton (pretty odd) and Billy Bragg & The Neurotics does Garageland. Now if anyone is allowed to cover The Clash it's Billy Bragg...!

Apparently Green Day are big Clash fans. Phil Jupitus (ex-BBC 6Music DJ) mentioned on one of his last shows, a time when Green Day had appeared on the BBC TV Show - Later With Jools Holland. The show is recorded in one big studio, with about 6 or 7 bands and a live audience. For that show, they'd had Mick Jones and Paul Simonon in the audience, ready to do a short chat with Jools in between the bands. Phil J had been at the recording. He said that before the recording Green Day had been hanging round like school kids too shy to speak to Jones or SImonon. Eventually one of them plucked up the courage to go over and asked Mick and Paul to autograph a guitar. According to Jupitus, in the presence of these two aging West London punks, Green Day had lost all of their swagger and attitude, and were really shy and nervous.

I guess it just goes to show that what The Clash achieved 25-30 years ago, still means something to youngsters coming along.

Oh, and of course Green Day aren't punk - it's just a label they've been given by the lazy media.

      Nick
