I saw them in Fresno of all places back in either '82 or '83. The opening band, which I thought was pretty good, was getting boo'd and the audience was throwing things at them. Two songs into their set, Joe Strummer barges out from backstage, the band stops playing, and Strummer yells at the crowd "Shut the fuck up. These guys are going to be great some day and you are going to regret it." He marched back behnd the curtains, the band fired up again and everyone got into the music.

The opening band was Los Lobos.

hey tim.....funny u should mention that show "fridays"
lots of musical guests on that show....the one i remember most was the Jam (a personal favorite) apparently they played in nyc and La....did the fridays show and went home..what a shame.
On a side note...Fear played saturday night live and i have never seen that episode again. They never include fear in any of the musical highlights of the show and i don't think they rerun it ever. Of course, as soon as i post this ...some punk.....lol....is gonna find all the specifics and send us a link to the download and all that crap...
I would love to see it again...as Belushi came out and stage dived during Fear's second set..if i remember right..damn senior moment.

I was a little fleebag watching a crappy portable black n white.the set had a broken channel changer so you had to use pliers and they would shock the crap out of you . So, I'm stuck watchind boring saturday night live , when this band comes on,
and belts out rock the casbah in front of terrified looking cops and security. I never bought another rock album after that!

I saw them at the US festival (*ugh - I hate huge rock fests), then I saw them when they toured with the Who. Soon after, I saw the "other" Clash during the Cut the Crap tour (*ugh) and was hoping for a Clash reunion during the later years (*heavy sigh w/a tear rolling down my cheek).

I was lucky enough to have seen The Clash six times. The best was the first, in 1980 I think, to support London Calling at the Warfield in SF.

I saw the tours that followed and they were all pretty good but when they started doing the stadium shows it just seemed kind of out of place.

Definitely a band that could blow the doors off a small venue.

I don't know how I missed them. Saw BAD a couple of times in about '85 or '85. Small club in Chicago, which rocked. Of all the bands I did see, this is the one that got away.

Yeah, I saw BAD with PIL in the early 90's. It got Mick (whinebag) Jones to autograph my 86 Combat Rock tour shirt and he looked at me a little strangely (like, what's this kid with liberty spikes doing at a BAD show). I'm only 30 so I missed the real Clash. I saw Joe with the Mescaleros 2 years back in SF. I have to say that I cried during a couple of the Clash songs, because I knew I would never be able to see them in the midst of the most meaningful part of their history.

      sigh...

Sometime in early 1978 at Victoria Park in North London at one of the Rock Against Racism outdoor concerts. Support bands were
Steel Pulse, X Ray Spex (whatever happened to Poly Styrene, is she sill into the Hare Krishna thing ?) and some others.
The sound system went out a couple of times, gobbing (spitting large wads of phlegm) was still happening. I think that this was
in the period between complete control and clash city rockers being released on 45.
Even though it was organized by RAR there were large numbers of skinheads there, this was before they all shifted their allegiance to Sham 69.
Clash concerts at the time were amazing, if the sound system didn't die, if there was no riot between nazi skinheads and everyone else, if the police let them play, if the local council dind't shut the whole thing down, if Strummer wasn't sick ...

Didn't have the opportunity to see the Clash live, but did get to see Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros in 1999 at Bogart's in Cincinnati. They put on a GREAT show. They played some of their stuff and a ton of Clash songs including a stunning version of Safe European Home. The crowd was into it and the band really seemed to feed off of that. They seemed genuinely appreciative of the positive reception. It was honestly one of the best shows I've ever been to. It gave me a hint of what a Clash show must have been like.
